Introduction

The Department of Economics is in the Faculty of Arts & Social Science.  The history of this department dates back to 1994 when it was first created from the extant Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness Management. Initially, the department had one degree programme, BA (General). Since 2005, the department has developed and introduced three specialized undergraduate degree programs aimed at training manpower in critical sectors of the Kenyan economy that had been identified as lacking specialized skills.
In September 2010, the Master of Arts in Economics was inaugurated with the admission of the pioneer class in the same.

In 2010, the Bachelor of Science in Economics & Statistics was introduced in Nakuru Town Campus due to its high demand, and to complement the program offered in Main Campus.

The programs are of high quality, which that ensures the graduates are to effectively participate in all the critical sectors of the Kenyan economy, be it agricultural, manufacturing/industrial, or the business and financial sector, and by so doing, drive in Kenya in attaining the goals envisioned in Vision 2030.
