Dean, of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

Introduction

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FASS) has been in existence since 1986. Its establishment was simultaneous with the transformation of Egerton College into a University College and, subsequently, into a fully-fledged University (1986-1987). In the best traditions of institutional intellectualism, the new University acknowledged that it could not conceive of itself without the solid presence in it of the humanistic and social disciplines. Since 1986, the Faculty has concerned itself with defining and asserting its identity, as well as with creating adequate conditions for its sustained growth.

The academic staff around 120 Lecturers with diverse specializations and talents are the Faculty's major resource. FASS occupies a modern complex with spacious seminar rooms, a language laboratory, and modern staff offices. There are, in addition, two theatre halls, which are convenient venues for public lectures and other academic events, and for theatre art performances. The Faculty has a well-equipped computer lab that also serves as a Cyber Cafe. Departments have their libraries or resource centres. The Faculty has a capacity to teach over 500 students.

Apart from studies on campus, the Departments in FASS organise academic trips and field attachments. The editorial Office of Egerton Journal: Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Series is housed in FASS.

The International Humanitarian Law Centre is located in the Faculty. The Community Resource Centre serves as the link between the University and the surrounding community.

  • Department of Economics
  • Department of Literature, Languages and Linguistics
  • Department of History ,Philosophy and Religious Studies
  • Department of Peace, Security and Social Studies

Mission

The Faculty's unfolding vision is to produce generation upon generation of learned men and women whose integration into the society and professional contribution to it, together with that of the Faculty academic staff, lead to the evolvement of a modern nation highly respected for its achievements by the international community.

The Faculty, through its Departments, strives to impart to its students comprehensive knowledge in the respective disciplines. Owing to the fundamental status of the humanities and social sciences in the broad spectrum of scholarship, students develop as deeply-rooted intellectuals. A balanced exposure to both theoretical and practical aspects of study allows for both an engagement in pure academic thought, as well as an efficacious application of the acquired knowledge and skills to the performance of socially relevant tasks. Through active promotion of interdepartmental and interdisciplinary study, the Faculty aims to produce all-rounded individuals who will fit well in the wide world of work both within Kenya and beyond.

Postgraduate students are called upon to undertake research within a certain discipline or across departmental and disciplinary boundaries and thus generate new knowledge, relevant to the various needs of the society. At the fore-front of these research endeavours are the academicians.

Staff members engage in research intended to have a significant impact on national development, particularly in the areas of cultural and social life. They also offer community service.
