Introduction

Research and development are the pillars of modern agriculture.  There should be on a continual basis a framework and individuals with the capacity to promote improvements in the knowledge base of production agriculture, marketing, agricultural inputs and communication of agricultural innovations.  Additionally, there should be a continuous examination of sustainability in agricultural production and use of the natural resources. The Ph.D. program in Agricultural Education intends to prepare researchers and philosophers in the discipline of agricultural education.   The programme is by research and thesis.  The graduates of the programme are prepared to assume responsibilities in research, advisory and extension services, consultancy, management and university teaching.

The graduates of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Agricultural Education should be able to:

1. plan and conduct research in agricultural education, agriculture, rural development and agricultural communications.
2. plan and teach agriculture, agricultural education and communications programmes.
3. monitor and evaluate agricultural programmes
4. plan and manage consultancies in agriculture, agricultural education and rural development.
5. Manage educational and agricultural organizations.

Admission Requirements

• The common Egerton University rules and regulations for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy Programme shall apply.
• Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy programme in Agricultural Education shall be required to have a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education and Extension or its equivalent.
• Applicants for the Doctor of Philosophy programme in Agricultural Education shall be required to present a research project proposal acceptable to the Department of Agricultural Education and Extension.

Duration of Study

Doctor of Philosophy programme in Agricultural Education shall last for a period of not less than three years and not more than five academic years.

• The Ph.D. programme in Agricultural Education shall follow Egerton University Rules and Regulations.
• The Ph.D. programme in Agricultural Education shall be conducted by research and thesis.
• The candidate for Ph.D. programme shall defend proposals at the departmental and faculty levels
• At least two (2) academic staff shall supervise each Ph.D. candidate. At least one of the Supervisors shall be a member of the Department of Agricultural Education and Extension.
• Candidates shall be required to attend and participate in departmental and faculty seminars.
• Candidates shall be required to present quarterly reports on their research work.

Submission and Examination of Thesis

A candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy programme in Agricultural Education shall defend his/her thesis before a Board of Examiners constituted by the Board of Postgraduate Studies.
